Really lovely route!! The Peak Forest Canal was begun in 1794 and wasdesigned to transport limestone from the quarries of Derbyshire. To extend the walk you can continue along the canal to Marple and visit the noteworthy Marple Canal Locks.The Sett Valley Trail also starts in the town. 4458492. Not a difficult walk and if you do this one clockwise its a nice gentle walk along the canal for the last half. The area has no known connections to the Romans, but was so named to attract tourists in the Victorian era. There is a modern Hydro Electric scheme amongst the remains of a bygone mill.
