The subject of regeneration lies outside of the scope of the Epistle to the Hebrews, so that we look in vain for a clear dogmatical statement of it. If a man is not guilty of a charge made against him, he should be justified. The necessity of regeneration for all men grew out of the depravity of mans nature. When we meditate in Gods Word, the truth of God has its own inherent power to prevent sin. The Greek word so rendered (palingenesia) is used by classical writers with reference to the changes produced by the return of spring. It is not a fellowship of the rich, the elite, or of one denomination as against another. But God did find a way whereby He could remain just and at the same time justify the guilty who would do no more than believe. Romans 9:10-13); Samson before he was conceived (Judges 13:3-5); and John the Baptist prior to his conception (Luke 1:13-17). When we are born again, the Holy Spirit begets new life, Divine life, so that we are said to become partakers of the divine nature (II Peter 1:4). Before our sins were put away, we had absolutely no right of approach to God. In Pauls day, and later in the days of the Protestant Reformation, and in our own day, it would be difficult to find a truth more cardinal to our historic Christian faith than the doctrine of Justification. Mangey, ii.144) uses the word, speaking of the post-diluvial epoch of the earth, as of a new world, and Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (xi.1), of a periodical restoration of all things, laying stress upon the constant recurrence and uniformity of all happenings, which thought the Preacher expressed by "There is no new thing under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Our standard of living, viewed from the financial and material side, has risen to an all time high, but our standard of living, viewed from the spiritual side, has dropped to an all time low. Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will (Ephesians 1:5). But this spake He of the Spirit . The devils (demons) also believe, and tremble (James 2:19), but such mere belief cannot save one. The mass of the people of Israel are therefore as yet scarcely aware of the fact that the conditions on which these divine promises are to be attained are more than ceremonial and ritual ones.
